Agios Dimitrios is Mitropolitikos temple of Halkida in which the official celebrations and ceremonies are performed. Located in the square of Ag. Demetrios on the road Anthony Neophytou and Metropolis. In this area was under Turkish rule the Turkish cemetery in the city.
Built in 1837, immediately after the liberation of the city from the Turks. The church has fine examples of the style basilica with three naves. It is stone-built and externally there are marble plaques that decorate the façade. Testimonies indicate that the church was built in place of a Byzantine church. Testimonies are reinforced by the fact that the back of the church under the sanctuary, there is a catacomb chapel.
Today, after years of repairs, the church is in perfect condition and in conjunction with the redevelopment of the square and many old mansions that surround it, have turned the area into a city gem.
