The High Bridge Evripos (usually referred to as New Chalkis bridge) is a cable-stayed bridge over the Strait of Evripos Evia, near Halkida. It is part of the bypass road of Halkida and joins the Boeotian coast near the cement factory in Evia in Battery Hill, via Highway Schimatari-Chalkida.
It has a total length of 694.5 meters, usable width of 12.5 meters and 34.5 meters headroom. The thickness of the deck is 45 cm, the thinner the world.The construction of the project began in May 1985 and completed in 1993. The inauguration took place on 9 July 1993. The project cost reached 2.5 billion drachmas (with prices of the time).
The bridge consists of accesses and the central part. The access bridges have a length of 4 × 35,875 meters (Viotia) and 4 × 39 meters (Evia). The central portion of the bridge 395 meters long cable-is a central opening 215 and side measures 2 × 90 meters. The central part is held by cables at about 6 meters. The foundation of the pillars was at a depth of about 28 meters. Provision is made to protect the project from ship collision.
Its construction was a term project for the city as all guests and heavy vehicles are not required to go through the old bridge and thus from the city center, but through the high bridge and the bypass can be moved to the city but also to the North or South Evia, without burdening the city center, faster and more comfortable.
